What Is Split Tunneling?
Split tunneling is a VPN configuration that divides your traffic into two streams: one through the encrypted VPN tunnel and one connecting directly to the internet. This lets you protect sensitive activities (banking, email) while using a direct connection for bandwidth-intensive tasks (streaming, gaming).
Split tunneling can be configured by application, by destination IP, or by network interface. This flexibility is valuable for users who need VPN protection and local network access simultaneously.
Benefits and Risks
The primary benefit is performance: traffic that does not need VPN protection avoids encryption overhead and routing latency. The main risk is that any traffic outside the tunnel is completely unprotected. Misconfigured split tunneling can expose sensitive data without your knowledge.
Split Tunneling in VPNWG
VPNWG supports split tunneling through WireGuard's AllowedIPs. By default, all traffic is routed through the tunnel for maximum security. Users who need split tunneling can configure specific IP ranges in the WireGuard client. Configure VPNWG split tunneling.
