SOCKS5 Proxy

SOCKS5 is a versatile proxy protocol that can handle any type of network traffic including TCP and UDP, supporting authentication but lacking built-in encryption unlike a VPN.

What Is SOCKS5?

SOCKS5 (Socket Secure version 5) routes network traffic through a proxy server. Unlike HTTP proxies, SOCKS5 handles any traffic type — web, email, file transfers, torrenting, gaming. It supports both TCP and UDP and includes optional username/password authentication.

SOCKS5 operates at a lower level than HTTP proxies, making it more versatile. It simply relays packets without interpreting data, working with virtually any application.

SOCKS5 Limitations

The biggest limitation is no built-in encryption. Traffic passes through in plain text. Your ISP can see everything, and the proxy operator can monitor all data. SOCKS5 also requires per-application configuration.

VPN vs SOCKS5

While SOCKS5 proxies are faster (no encryption overhead), they provide no security. VPNWG encrypts all traffic at the system level, protects DNS, includes a kill switch, and works automatically with every app. Why VPN is better than a proxy.
